I Thought My Oven Racks Were Ruined—Until I Remembered Grandma’s Forgotten Trick

Step 2: Remove the Racks

Carefully remove the oven racks from your oven. If they’re particularly dirty, it might be a good idea to put down some old towels or newspapers to catch any drips or mess while you work.

Step 3: Create a Soaking Solution

In a large bucket or your bathtub, mix a generous amount of hot water with about a cup of baking soda. Stir the mixture until the baking soda is dissolved. This will create a soothing, abrasive solution that’s perfect for breaking down the gunk.

Step 4: Soak the Racks

Submerge the oven racks in the soaking solution, ensuring they are fully covered. If you’re using aluminum foil, you can also line the bottom of your bucket to prevent scratches. Allow the racks to soak for at least 30 minutes to an hour.

Step 5: Scrub Away the Grime

After soaking, take a sponge or scrubbing brush and begin to scrub the racks. The combination of baking soda and hot water should make it easy to wipe away the buildup. You may need to put a little extra elbow grease into particularly stubborn spots, but the grime should begin to lift.

Step 6: Rinse with Vinegar

To enhance the cleaning effect, spray the racks with vinegar after scrubbing. The reaction between vinegar and baking soda will create a fizzing action that helps lift any remaining dirt. Rinse the racks thoroughly with hot water to remove any residue.

Step 7: Dry and Reinstall

Once the racks are clean, dry them with a towel or let them air dry completely before reinstalling them in your oven.
