The Curiosity: Do Apple Seeds Have Any Benefits?
Despite their bad reputation, some people believe apple seeds have potential health benefits. Alternative medicine practitioners sometimes claim that small doses of amygdalin can fight cancer cells. This idea is linked to “laetrile” or “vitamin B17”, a controversial compound made from apricot kernels.
Supporters argue that cancer cells are more vulnerable to cyanide, so targeted release could kill them. However, scientific evidence does not support these claims, and many health agencies warn that the risks far outweigh any unproven benefits.
So, while the idea is intriguing, it’s not safe to consume apple seeds as a “natural treatment.”
What Happens If You Eat Too Many Seeds?
If someone were to eat a dangerous quantity of crushed seeds, they could experience symptoms of cyanide poisoning, including:
Headache
Dizziness
Nausea and vomiting
Stomach cramps
Rapid breathing or difficulty breathing
Confusion
Seizures (in severe cases)
In extreme cases, cyanide poisoning can be fatal. Medical attention would be needed immediately.
